The deliberate sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was undoubtedly a war crime of the greatest magnitude. A great liner, packed with refugees, the loss was much much worse than that of the Titanic. No one will ever know the precise number of innocents slaughtered on that awful night. There is official reluctance to investigate the circumstances of this heinous carnage. One can understand why.
